Engineering Stack
Explore the MARCH Engineering Stack and the services that support every stage of the asset lifecycle, from design and delivery to maintenance and optimisation.
Switchgear & Control Panels is one of nine capabilities within the MARCH Engineering Stack.
Our teams work across new installations, system upgrades and live operational sites — combining technical rigour with a practical understanding of safety, compliance, maintainability and long-term asset performance.
Services range from LV switchboards and MCCs through to ATEX panels, pneumatic solutions, DfMA-led panel solutions, power quality mitigation and specialist drive systems, supported by structured installation, testing and commissioning.
Well-designed control panels provide the foundation for safe, reliable and maintainable electrical and automation systems. Panel design activities consider schematics, layouts, segregation, thermal performance, cable management, labelling and compliance requirements to ensure panels are suited to their operational environment. The result is improved safety, increased reliability and panels that are easier to install, commission, maintain and modify throughout their lifecycle.
Electrical distribution systems rely on switchboards that provide safe power distribution, protection and operational continuity across the installation. Low voltage switchboards are designed and manufactured to suit site requirements, incorporating the appropriate form of separation, protection, metering and future capacity provisions. The result is improved electrical safety, greater system availability and easier maintenance, while supporting future expansion and reducing downtime during faults or servicing.
Motor control centres provide a centralised approach to managing, protecting and controlling motors across industrial facilities. MCCs are designed and built to accommodate starters, drives, protection devices and control equipment within maintainable, segregated and safely operated assemblies. The result is improved equipment availability, simplified maintenance and a consistent approach to motor control, protection and diagnostics.
Process control panels provide the interface between field equipment, automation systems and operational control. Panels are designed and manufactured to house PLCs, remote I/O, power supplies, protection devices and industrial communications equipment within a structured and maintainable assembly. The result is improved automation reliability, more efficient commissioning and panels that are easier to maintain, fault-find and adapt as operational requirements change.
Hazardous areas require electrical and control systems that are designed to operate safely within environments where explosive atmospheres may be present. ATEX solutions incorporate appropriate protection concepts, documentation and certification requirements to ensure equipment is suitable for its intended application and operating conditions. The result is safer operation in hazardous environments, stronger regulatory compliance and reduced risk to people, assets and business continuity.
Compressed air systems provide the actuation and control functions that support many automated processes. Pneumatic panels and distribution systems are designed to manage air regulation, isolation and distribution while providing the interfaces needed for instrumentation and control. The result is improved actuator reliability, simplified maintenance and isolation procedures, and reduced unplanned stoppages caused by air quality or distribution issues.
Safety requirements often evolve as equipment, standards and operational risks change over time. Safety upgrades enhance existing panels and control systems through the implementation of safety-rated components, safeguarding interfaces, interlocks and improved functional segregation, helping ensure systems continue to operate safely and effectively. The result is reduced risk of incidents, stronger compliance and improved protection for personnel, assets and production through higher levels of safety integrity.
Obsolete electrical and control components can introduce increasing operational risk as spare parts become harder to source and manufacturer support comes to an end. Upgrade programmes replace unsupported equipment with modern while maintaining the functions, interfaces and operational performance already relied upon by the operation. The result is reduced breakdown risk, improved supportability and extended asset life through controlled change and minimal operational disruption.

Existing control systems often require targeted improvements to address changing operational requirements, evolving standards or performance limitations without the need for complete replacement. Retrofit projects introduce new functionality, improve performance and modernise panel designs through carefully planned modifications to hardware, layouts and wiring. The result is improved performance, stronger compliance and a cost-effective route to system modernisation with minimal disruption to operations.
Successful energisation depends on electrical and control systems being thoroughly inspected, tested and verified before they enter service. Installation, testing and commissioning activities confirm that MCCs, switchgear and control panels operate correctly, with protection, interlocking and system integration functioning as intended. The result is safe energisation, reduced commissioning defects and a smoother route to handover, supported by comprehensive test documentation and evidence.
Corrosive, wet and outdoor environments can significantly reduce the lifespan of traditional metal enclosures. Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) panels and enclosures provide a durable alternative for protecting electrical and control equipment in harsh operating conditions, helping maintain reliability while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements. The result is longer service life, lower maintenance costs and improved protection of critical equipment in demanding environments.
Modern electrical systems increasingly rely on drives and power electronics that can introduce harmonics and affect power quality across the installation. Harmonic mitigation solutions, including passive and active filtering technologies, help control electrical distortion and maintain stable system performance in line with operational and equipment requirements. The result is improved power quality, reduced overheating and nuisance tripping, enhanced protection of sensitive equipment and stronger compliance with supply and equipment standards.
High-power variable speed drives can generate significant heat, making thermal management a critical consideration in some applications. Water-cooled VSD systems provide an effective solution where air cooling is impractical or where heat dissipation must be carefully controlled within the operating environment. The result is improved thermal stability, enhanced drive reliability and more compact installations that support continuous operation in demanding conditions.

Large motors and critical assets often require precise speed control, efficient operation and controlled starting characteristics to perform reliably in demanding applications. Medium and high-voltage variable speed drive systems are designed and integrated to provide effective motor control, protection coordination and operational flexibility for high-power processes. The result is improved energy efficiency, enhanced controllability and reduced mechanical stress, helping extend asset life and improve equipment reliability.

Manufacturing and assembly costs are often determined by decisions made early in the design process. Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) applies engineering principles that simplify components, assemblies and installation requirements, helping reduce complexity throughout delivery. The result is lower cost, improved buildability and greater programme certainty through solutions that are easier to manufacture, assemble and install.
Selecting the right drive and motor combination is critical to achieving efficient, reliable and cost-effective operation across motor-driven processes. Variable speed drives and electrical motors are supplied from a range of manufacturers, supported by application-specific selection, configuration and technical guidance to ensure equipment is matched to operational requirements. The result is improved system performance, enhanced energy efficiency and reliable operation supported by the right equipment for the application.
