Reduced downtime for national utilities company

March worked with a UV reactor supplier and an electrical installation company to completely replace the UV dosing plant and its associated control and automation components.

History

The site Water Treatment Works (WTW) was at risk of Cryptosporidium due to the method of groundwater abstraction combined with local farmland runoff. To treat water containing Cryptosporidium, Ultraviolet (UV) light is used which renders the Cryptosporidium inert.

The existing UV treatment plant process is comprised of nine UV reactor streams. These needed upgrading and the control equipment used to automate the process was on legacy equipment.

Solution

March worked with a UV reactor supplier and an electrical installation company to completely replace the UV dosing plant and its associated control and automation components.

Work included but was not limited to; decommissioning the nine existing UV reactors and replacing them with 4 new UV reactors with the capacity to support the same process loading.

Peak wrote the control software for the UV PLC from scratch, providing the site with a completely automated UV treatment process.

Installation of two new Profibus networks so the UV PLC and new process control equipment could communicate. This included control valves, flowmeters and water quality instrumentation.

Working with another supplier, Peak ensured that critical process equipment was split evenly between each Profibus network for a resilient system.

A new PanelView Plus HMI was installed, and O&M manuals and face-to-face operator training were provided before final handover to the client.

Results

The site Water Treatment Works is now running with a sophisticated control philosophy. Legacy equipment was replaced with new equipment that has reduced the risk of failures.

Installation of approved equipment leaves the client with easily supported and replaced assets, reducing downtime during failures.

The UV PLC software installed by Peak communicated with each UV reactor’s microprocessor using Modbus allowing the UV PLC to collect diagnostic information and issue commands.

The upgrade led to efficient control of equipment due to reduced stress on the site assets and ensuring a robust, reliable solution.

The PanelView Plus HMI allowed for local monitoring and control of the UV process.
